Driving sustainability at sea: Jowic Elteknik’s role in maritime engineering

2025-01-31

Jowic Elteknik, a part of Nordic Drives Group, has established their role in maritime engineering through a collaboration with Danfoss. This partnership has opened doors to exciting projects on cruise ships worldwide, focusing on efficient energy systems through frequency converters. Central to these projects is Alex Edström, a Service Engineer who has traveled to destinations like the Caribbean, France and Norway as a part of his work.

Strengthening expertise through partnership with Danfoss

Jowic Elteknik has been servicing ships, like SCA’s cargo ships, for many years. However, their collaboration with Danfoss has introduced a new focus on cruise ships. As a trusted service and warranty partner, Jowic Elteknik is tasked with commissioning frequency converters for cooling compressors onboard.

– These converters are essential for energy efficiency. Without them, the startup of motors can draw excessive power, leading to higher fuel consumption. By using frequency converters, we’re not only saving energy but also reducing environmental impact, Alex Edström, Service Engineer at Jowic Elteknik in Sundsvall, explains.

Alex has extensive experience in maritime projects. He is one of our service engineers that ensures smooth operations onboard cruise ships around the world, and his work has taken him to stunning locations such as the Caribbean, France, Italy and along Norway’s beautiful coastline.

Unique challenges of working at sea

Working on cruise ships comes with unique challenges not encountered in land-based work, such as the use of water-cooled systems instead of air-cooled ones, requiring specialized expertise and equipment.

– It's a different setup compared to factories. Working with liquid cooling systems was new to me, but it's been a great learning experience, Alex says.

In addition to technical challenges, the dynamic environment of a cruise ship requires flexibility. Schedules often depend on the ship’s itinerary, whether it’s in dry dock in Marseille or sailing through the Norwegian fjords.

A collaboration across borders

These projects bring together diverse teams from around the world. While Jowic Elteknik handles the commissioning, the broader effort involves electricians, welders and engineers from several companies.

– You quickly become part of a team, even though it’s not your usual colleagues. It’s rewarding to collaborate with people from different nationalities and learn new technical terms in other languages, Alex adds.

The future growth in the maritime industry

Building on their current success, our team at Jowic Elteknik is set to further strengthen their expertise in maritime engineering as they continue working on cruise ships worldwide.

– This work is ongoing, and while it’s hard to predict exact dates and locations, we know there will be more ships in the future. It's an exciting challenge to adapt to the needs of each project, and we’re ready for what’s next, Alex concludes.
