New cold forging machine for cable lugs doubles capacity for our customer Elpress
2026-07-28
Elpress's previous machine has been a reliable asset for nearly 20 years. However, as market demands for volume and efficiency rise, new technology is required.
A successful collaboration between Jowic Elteknik and SWT Production
The idea for the machine and the entire core concept was born at SWT Production, who also took charge of the mechanical engineering. When the time came to bring the mechanics to life with electricity and automation, the customer, Elpress, recommended our team at Jowic Elteknik.
– SWT Production has done a fantastic job with the overall concept and the mechanics. Our role at Jowic Elteknik has been to handle the electrical design, programming, and commissioning. It has been an incredibly smooth project where our different areas of expertise complemented each other perfectly, says Michael Östman, Electrical Engineer at Jowic Elteknik.
Smart servo technology delivers 1800 cable lugs per hour
The absolute biggest breakthrough with the new machine is that its capacity has doubled compared to previous machines. The secret lies in a combination of clever mechanics and modern servo technology. Instead of pressing one cable lug at a time, the new machine rolls out two simultaneously.
The area of servos has not only increased the pace but, above all, created a machine with exceptionally high reliability:
- High peak capacity: The machine can produce up to 1800 cable lugs per hour.
- Over 90% availability: Thanks to the precise control of servo technology, the machine is incredibly dependable. The few production disruptions that do occur can usually be traced back to material defects in the copper, rather than the machine itself.
Why electric servos outperform hydraulics
This project aligns perfectly with Nordic Drives Group’s mission – to provide the Nordic industry with energy-efficient solutions that optimize operations. By replacing traditional hydraulics with modern servo technology, you get a more reliable and resource-efficient machinery park.
– I actively encourage customers to replace hydraulics with large electric servos instead. The benefits are numerous, says Michael.
The key advantages of choosing an electric servo over hydraulics are:
-
No oil, no leaks: Eliminating hydraulic oil removes the risk of leaks, resulting in a cleaner and safer working environment.
-
Unbeatable repeatability: Hydraulic systems are often affected by the operating temperature of the oil, which can cause variations in the pressing process. Servos, on the other hand, run with the exact same speed and force whether the facility is cold in the morning or warm in the afternoon.
-
Minimal maintenance: With fewer moving parts, no filter changes, and no oil to manage, the machine's maintenance requirements drop drastically over time.
